Kashmir is reachable by road, rail and air. Srinagar International Airport, about 14 km from the city, is the fastest way in. With the new Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link (USBRL), the valley is now on the national railway map as well. Private and shared cabs are the most popular way to travel between cities. The quickest way is a flight to Srinagar International Airport (SXR), about 14 km from the city centre. It is well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jammu, Goa and Leh. Airlines operating to Srinagar include IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet. On arrival you can use local taxis, cabs and buses to reach your hotel.
Kashmir has a good road network and is well connected to other cities in Jammu and Kashmir, with private and public buses reaching smaller towns too. There are direct buses to the region from Delhi and Chandigarh. Kashmir is connected to Jammu by the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH44). You can reach the valley comfortably by bus, car, cab or taxi.
Srinagar is now rail-connected. The USBRL, completed in 2025, links Katra and Jammu to Srinagar and Baramulla, and Vande Bharat services run on the Katra-Srinagar section. Travellers from the rest of India can take a train to Jammu Tawi or Katra, the traditional railheads, and continue by the new valley trains or by road. Some border or restricted zones (for example parts of Gurez or areas near the LoC) may need a permit, which your local agent can arrange. Postpaid SIMs from any Indian operator work across the Kashmir valley. Prepaid SIMs issued outside J&K generally do not work here, as roaming on out-of-state prepaid connections is blocked under security rules, so carry a postpaid SIM or buy a local J&K prepaid SIM with ID. Coverage can still be patchy in remote spots like Sonmarg, Gurez and on high-altitude treks. Jio, Airtel and BSNL have the widest reach. Carry a postpaid SIM if you can, and download offline maps.
